Summary

The first ever novel set in the blockbuster universe of League of Legends, one of the most popular video games of all time, Ruination is an epic tale of magic, revenge, and an empire on the verge of ruin。

Camavor is a brutal land with a bloody legacy。 Where the empire’s knights go, slaughter follows。

Kalista seeks to change that。 When her young and narcissistic uncle, Viego, becomes king, she vows to temper his destructive instincts, as his loyal confidant, advisor, and military general。 But her plans are thwarted when an assassin’s poisoned blade strikes Viego’s wife, Isolde, afflicting her with a malady for which there is no cure。

As Isolde’s condition worsens, Viego descends into madness and grief, threatening to drag Camavor down with him。 Kalista makes a desperate gambit to save the kingdom: she searches for the long lost Blessed Isles, rumored to hold the queen’s salvation, if only Kalista can find them。

But corruption grows in the Blessed Isles’ capital, where a vengeful warden seeks to ensnare Kalista in his cruel machinations。 She will be forced to choose between her loyalty to Viego and doing what she knows is right–for even in the face of utter darkness, one noble act can shine a light that saves the world。

This book is amazing! If you are familiar with the League of Legends universe you'll love this book as it expands on the story of Ruination。 I found the writing amazing and the story thrilling。 It is easily my favorite book of the year。 The multiple POV's add dimension to the story and showcase how well Riot has made their universe。 Everyone is distinct in their motivations and well-rounded characters。 This book is amazing! Before reading this book, all I knew about the League of Legends universe (or Runeterra) is all the things I still remembered from Arcane (which only focused on a small part of that world), some stuff from the Sentinels of Light event (which people hated), and the names I recognize from the games I’ve played, even if I knew nothing about the stories behind those characters。 And after reading this book, I feel like I really want to know more about these characters and places now, even the ones th Before reading this book, all I knew about the League of Legends universe (or Runeterra) is all the things I still remembered from Arcane (which only focused on a small part of that world), some stuff from the Sentinels of Light event (which people hated), and the names I recognize from the games I’ve played, even if I knew nothing about the stories behind those characters。 And after reading this book, I feel like I really want to know more about these characters and places now, even the ones that this book only briefly mentioned。 And considering the context of this book (being the first published novel set in this universe), I guess it means the book did its job。Anthony Reynolds’ Ruination tells the story of Kalista, a warrior from the land of Camavor, she has always been loyal to Camavor, but deep down, she hates the imperialistic and corrupt nature of her fellow ruling class。 When her uncle, Viego, becomes king, she becomes his most trusted advisor, vowing to protect him at all cost。 Even when an assassin tried to kill the young king, Kalista managed to protect Viego。 But it came at a cost, as the poisoned blade Kalista deflected hit Viego’s wife, Isolde instead。 Racked with desperation and slowly losing his sanity, Viego would try anything to keep Isolde alive and make her well again, even if it means letting his kingdom crumble。 And it’s up to Kalista to make sure it doesn’t happen。I didn’t expect much coming into this book。 I thought I would just recognize names and find out about their stories, and that’s about it。 And while yes, I did get that experience, it was also so much more than that。 Similar to how it was with Arcane, these characters are in a much earlier point in time compared to how I know them from the games。 A lot of the time, I just go “Oh hey, I know your name!” often followed by “But you seem so different from how i know you。”, and I think that’s a really fun experience, and it’s probably even more fun for people who don’t play the game, because then you wouldn’t be spoiled about how these characters will end up。 I think this is a really good book。 It set out to do something specific, and it managed to do that while telling a great story that is full of memorable characters, but I don’t think it’s perfect。Read the rest of my review here 。。。more

Now, wasn’t that just the most pleasant surprise!! I went into this book without any prior knowledge about the wider League of Legends universe (aside from having watched and loved Arcane), so I had no idea what to expect here。 Well, I am happy to say that I was completely hooked by the engaging epic fantasy story that I got!RUINATION mainly follows the story of Kalista, the niece and close advisor of the narcissistic young king, Viego, of Camavor。 She wants nothing more than to relieve Camavor of its bloody legacy, but her plans are hindered when the king’s beloved wife falls ill to the poisoned blade of an assassin。 Viego takes this hit very poorly and quickly descends into madness, so Kalista takes it upon herself to do anything to heal the queen and keep her country safe。 She fares out to the fabled and mysterious Blessed Isles to seek a cure, but her quest soon proves to be more dangerous than anyone could ever have expected。 Now, I think you can definitely feel that this story is set in an existing universe, because the worldbuilding was absolutely tantalising and I was completely immersed。 This might be a relatively short fantasy novel, with it being under 500 pages, but it is filled to the brim with rich worldbuilding and intriguing lore。 There was a constant feeling of suspense and intrigue, especially surrounding the mysterious Blessed Isles, which kept me glued to the page。 And the story itself is full of interesting revelations and unexpected twists and turns, which made this a super compelling and engaging read。 The character work was also really well done。 Kalista was an extremely interesting character to follow and I immediately latched onto her。 She is strong, curious, independent, and willing to do anything to save her country。 Her relationship to the king was one of my favourite aspects of the book, because it was just so complex, as Viego is the type of character that straddles the line between villain and hero。 She clearly cares deeply for him, yet she can’t deny that he is becoming a threat to his own kingdom as his mental state is deteriorating。 We also follow another POV from someone on the Blessed Isles, but I don’t want to say too much about that, because part of the fun was seeing the mysteries surrounding this character unravel。 All I will say is that I loved this additional POV and I think it added a nice layer of intrigue to the story。 Also, this character is a lot more morally gray than Kalista, which gave the story a bit of a darker tone that I really enjoyed! I loved reading from both of these perspectives and seeing their storylines converge was extremely satisfying。 Really effective and suspenseful storytelling, in my opinion! Now, while I liked the ending of this story, I do have to say that I felt like it was a bit rushed。 This book is fairly fast-paced the entire way through, but the final resolution happened at such a breakneck speed that supposedly hard hitting and emotional moments completely lost their impact for me。 I wish there had been another 25-50 or so pages to dive deeper and to see the fall-out, because in theory this conclusion was very satisfying, but the execution just wasn’t my favourite。 So, overall I really enjoyed this book and I am so glad I just took a leap of faith and went into this blind。 RUINATION was an incredibly engaging and intriguing fantasy adventure and I am really looking forward to more stories set in this universe。 Thank you to NetGalley and Orbit for an eARC in exchange for an honest review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

I am not sad I was sucked in by this one!Kalista, a warrior general, is niece to the king, a young narcissist out to prove himself。 When tragedy strikes, Kalista finds herself fielding his grief and outrageous demands because of it。 She is torn between loyalty and beliefs to save her kingdom。First off, it states that the book is based on the world of League of Nations, a video game。 I know nothing about this game and never felt low on info。 That must be an addition that is not necessary to understand this world。When it states, “…an empire on the verge of ruin” it really is true。 The king is unstable and emotional。 While he has great qualities, they are overshadowed by grief after a tragedy and we see how volatile and hostile his actions can be。 This is where the book takes a bit of a dark turn。 We follow him and his grief and the actions those brings out。 It’s heartbreaking and fascinating to watch his downfall。“Bravery was not the absence of fear; it was doing what needed to be done, despite being afraid。”Kalista is the ultimate tough female heroine。 She is strong physically and mentally and her strife for inequality and fair treatment for all is admirable。 She is loyal, almost to a fault and this adds to the story well。“As long as one ember burns, darkness can always be banished。。 keep that ember of hope burning。”Grael。 Oooh he’s an evil one。 He was the perfect villain。 He was rejected, humiliated and out to prove himself。 He turns dark and unpredictable。 I loved it, he added such untold obstacles。Truly, the rating of this might go up。 I’m still ruminating on the story and piecing together each part。 It really was fabulous。 So much going on with incredible world building, characters and it kept me guessing throughout。 The writing was enough to grab me right away which is something that rarely happens lately。I have 2 parts I did not like。 One, there were two minor characters that were animal-like (a woman with fur and otter-like ears and another with hooves and a horn) that seemed very out of place。 My brain also had a hard time imagining them。 But they were such small parts I couldn’t find the reasoning behind adding them in。 It didn’t say why they were different or where they were from。 Second, I didn’t love the romance。 Oddly it was such a very small part it shouldn’t be worth mentioning but it didn’t quite jive with me。 I needed a bit more build-up to make it believable。 I do think I would like the romance if there was a book 2 but I needed more in this book。I have no idea if there will be a book 2, but I will jump at the chance to grab it。 However, because I was so entranced with the story, I still have questions as to what happened。 It wouldn’t be necessary for the story but as a reader I just want to know! The end did turn a bit darker than I expected but I still loved it。 The consequences of actions were astronomical and it made a great addition to the story。 I’d love to read more of this author but because he has the same name as another author, I believe their details are getting mixed up。 When looking at the background blurb, the details did not match。 So I’ll be looking into that more。 He really did have the ability to keep me entertained throughout。Thank you to Orbit for the gifted copy!Review/content:https://www。theopenbooks。net/2022/09/。。。 。。。more

tl;dr: Ruination is an otherwise solid 4-star novel that clearly was negatively impacted by Riot's meddling。 While I will probably check out other non-LoL novels by the same author, I dearly hope that future novel forays into the League of Legends universe by *any* author will be less affected by corporate meddling。Some of my complaints are minor, some are less so, but they all add up to docking a star much as I might wish to do otherwise。My biggest complaint is the pivotal role played by Necrit tl;dr: Ruination is an otherwise solid 4-star novel that clearly was negatively impacted by Riot's meddling。 While I will probably check out other non-LoL novels by the same author, I dearly hope that future novel forays into the League of Legends universe by *any* author will be less affected by corporate meddling。Some of my complaints are minor, some are less so, but they all add up to docking a star much as I might wish to do otherwise。My biggest complaint is the pivotal role played by Necrit。 Much as I tend to loathe the "MY IMMERSION" crowd when it comes to gaming, in this one particular instance, I must agree。 A cameo in the Ruined King game? Great, sure, why not。 A pivotal role in the debut novel in the MAIN league of legends canon? Yeah, no, I don't think that should be given to a youtube influencer, regardless of how many lore videos they make。 I love diving into novels and emerging on the other side having completely forgotten reality, and every time Necrit came up (which was often; he was basically tied for the third most pivotal character in the book。。。), it dashed any hope of that。 Please, Riot。 There's a time and a place for Influencer cameos, and in the middle of a novel playing a major role is not it。 Keep the cameos to games or alternate universes, don't ruin your books with them。 (And yes, that does mean that Necrit is a more important character to this novel than Maokai or Yorick, and probably has about 10-20x the amount of pagespace dedicated to him as both of them combined。 Do with that knowledge as you wish。)Another 'corporate meddling' complaint that is more minor is that there are two cameos that feel fairly shoehorned in。 One character plays a pivotal role that I did not expect, but the book does well to include it。 The other two feel like they're shoved in for no reason -- one champion in particular shows up FAR away from her established home for seemingly no reason, when a unique NPC could have been created instead and served the exact same purpose while being less jarring。 I have to assume that Corporate basically said, "What champions can you possibly include? Okay, now throw in a handful more。"I have a few minor complaints about things that were retconned in Sentinels of Light and then continued forward into this novel (which I have to assume was in the works at the time), but those grievances have been hashed out so many times before that I don't have the strength to argue them again。 At the very least, at least keeping the story set during the original Ruination and not the modern day keeps it from most of the pitfalls of Sentinels。As far as the positives go -- the book is well written, particularly compared to most Riot lore。 I realize that's a low bar, but hey, it's a start, and acknowledging that is important if I hope for more in the future。The characters of the author's creation (that, to my knowledge, do not exist elsewhere or are Name Only appearances) are particularly stand-out highlights, with some of my favourite characters of the book being ones that exist only within its pages。 Seeing glimpses of the world a thousand years ago is neat as well, though I do admit that the glimpse of a particular precursor to a couple modern city-states had me wondering how they spent their 1,000 years if they were already at the point they were at in the book。 But honestly, that's such a minor complaint for a small (and probably Riot-forced, given Arcane) cameo, I don't really care as much as the others。The pacing is good, the quality of writing good, and unlike so many novels on Kindle, it's well-edited without a single noticeable typo。Would I recommend it? Mostly, yes。 But god, do I sorely hope that whatever Riot's second novel is, it's less burdened by Champion Quotas and Youtuber Inserts。 。。。more

And will they even be willing to listen to the Camavorians' request for help? It falls upon Kalista and her skills as a negotiator to persuade them should they find the island that may still only be a rumor clouded in the mists of legend and myth。This book was such an incredibly fun thrill ride which had me enthralled throughout。 When a book makes you angry at people and situations that take your time away from reading it, you know that's a magnificent story。 It also had one of the most emotionally suspensful endings that made me really on edge for the entire second half, not knowing how things would shake out for the characters that I had grown kind of attached to since meeting them in the opening chapters。 Oh and that last 40 pages were just some of the best action sequences and storytelling, period! I both wanted it to end and didn't because I knew that once it was finished I would be wanting another League of Legends book in my hand immediately。I can't say enough about how this book had me entirely caught under its spell for the week or so that I tore through it。 It's an easy book to love as the characters are so fully realized and dynamic, the world-building is of the highest quality, and the lore/history makes you want to continue to discover all of its many tantalizing layers。 This book has also made me want to go back and check out all of the different incarnations of this League of Legends universe。 Such is the quality of what Anthony Reynolds has given us with this brilliant first novel。Sometimes I wish I had better words or descriptions to fully capture how I feel about a story。 This is definitely one of those times as I'm struggling to fully do justice to what I just read。 Suffice to say that you just need to get this book at all costs and sit down with it。 And be prepared to never want to be away from it for any length of time。 If this is what the first book in this world is like, it's safe to assume that I am going to want to drop everything and get my hands on every future installment at the expense of whatever I may be reading at the time。 Do yourself a favor and pick up RUINATION by Anthony Reynolds。 You don't need to have played the game or watch the TV show to enjoy one of the best fantasy books of 2022。 。。。more

RUINATION is an engaging epic fantasy。 Set in the League of Legends universe, the book focuses on Kalista, the niece to the young king, who has been a close advisor to him and is helping to steer the ruling of Camavor。 This task has become easier since his ill-advised marriage to a foreign commoner, a seamstress named Isolde。 With Isolde on her side, Kalista has been able to work with the king, Viego, to help their country become something even better。That is, until an assassin's poison touches RUINATION is an engaging epic fantasy。 Set in the League of Legends universe, the book focuses on Kalista, the niece to the young king, who has been a close advisor to him and is helping to steer the ruling of Camavor。 This task has become easier since his ill-advised marriage to a foreign commoner, a seamstress named Isolde。 With Isolde on her side, Kalista has been able to work with the king, Viego, to help their country become something even better。That is, until an assassin's poison touches Isolde, leaving her deeply ill with the incurable affliction。 As she dies, Viego becomes more and more volatile, so when he sends her on a quest to the fabled Blessed Isles, Kalista knows she will do what she needs to do to help him in order to keep their country safe。 However, this quest proves to be more dangerous than she ever could have expected。This was an overall engaging and enjoyable fantasy with some good twists and turns along the way。 While I did not realize this was related to a video game, the book stands on its own with its own story to tell。 Kalista is an engaging character who loves her country and her uncle and his wife。 She seeks not only to help Viego but also to better understand him, which she does through the eyes of Isolde and the diary she has gifted her。 Viego is teetering on the precipice between villain and hero, and Kalista is bound by duty and love to try to push him in the right direction - however, she may learn that her nobility is her biggest flaw。The pace is quick, and the reader learns about this world along the way which has some learning curves at first to remember who and what everything is。 The twists and turns were really great with some big surprises throughout。 Ultimately, it was an entertaining read。Overall, RUINATION is an engaging epic fantasy that takes the reader to Camavor with an engaging new story。 I will be curious to see how the story evolves in future books。 Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more
